The Olive leaf is a staple of the Mediterranean diet, which scientists study for its potential to prevent chronic diseases. Research points to lower rates of illnesses and cancer-related deaths among populations that follow this diet. The positive effect is due in part to the powerful and health-boosting benefits of the olive leaf in laboratory tests. Olive leaf also contains a uniquely powerful antioxidant plant polyphenol called oleuropein. The antioxidants in Olive leaves can lower blood sugar and help stabilize it to maintain healthy levels. Researchers find that this effect helps treat people with diabetes and may prevent you from developing the disease. Studies also show that Olive leaf extract can reduce your body’s insulin resistance, one of the bi ggest risk factors for diabetes and unwanted weight gain. "Results of analysis presented significant decreases in BMI, fat mass, and body weight in the Olive leaf extract group compared to those in the placebo group."
Olive leaf - oleuropein - Studies show that the oleuropein in Olive leaf extract prevents unwanted weight gain and reduces the risk of obesity. In laboratory tests, oleuropein lowered body fat and reduced weight gain in animals fed high-cholesterol and high-fat diets. It also reduced food intake, suggesting olive leaf extract can also help manage appetite and overeating.
Because Olive leaves have been an important part of the Mediterranean diet for centuries, Olive leaf extract is considered very safe for most people. But for those using anti diabetic medications, or any prescribed medications, it is best avoided due to it's possible effect of altering the intensity of medications.
Barberry root bark (Berberis vulgaris L.) is one of the plants that contain berberine and has had a long history in eastern and western medical tradition and isknown to improve insulin sensitivity in people with and without diabetes.
"Results show that berberine actually increases insulin sensitivity and is capable of inhibiting alpha glucosidase, adipogenesis, and thus acts as an anti-obesity and hypoglycemic agent. Berberine reduces the density of serum cholesterol and triglycerides and can improve the function of liver enzymes, therefore, it can be suggested as a hypo lipidemic and hepato protective plant extract. The hepato protective effects of this extract are probably due to its antioxidant properties."
"Studies show that barberry has numerous health benefits, including being an anti-inflammatory. Moreover, it can be used as a medicinal herb to support/relieve a variety of disorders, such as diabetes, liver disease, gallbladder pain, digestive, urinary tract diseases, and gallstones." "Due to multiple properties of the root of Barberry on controlling the complications of diabetes, reducing and controlling lipid profiles and liver enzymes, and its obvious antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its ability to influence the secretion of the thyroid hormones, therefore this plant can be considered as a candidate for the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, thyroid disorders and liver disease."

Olive Leaf & Barberry Root ~ Compound Extract
Olive leaves are rich in bioactive substances which exert anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, insulin-sensitizing and antihypertensive effects. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible beneficial effects of an olive leaf extract (OLE) rich in secoiridoids and phenolic compounds on the aging-induced metabolic and vascular alterations.

Oleuropein in Olive Leaf and its Pharmacological Effects -

"Recently, Fki et al. [7] investigated and compared the hypolipidemic and hepatoprotective protective effects of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol-rich OLE at 16 mg/kg in HFD fed rats. Oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol similarly decreased body weight and white adipose tissue accumulation by inhibiting the excess increase in the number and/or size of adipocytes and improved the lipid metabolism by elevating the antioxidant system capacity and preventing the expression of the proteins implicated in inflammation and liver injury [7]. In a study by Shen et al. [20], the addition of OLE to HFD in mice significantly reduced body weight gain, visceral fat-pad weights, and plasma lipid levels by downregulating the expression of genes involved in adipogenesis and increasing the expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis in the visceral adipose tissue."
"This is the first study evaluating the effects of OLE supplementation with a weight loss diet in obese women."
"CONCLUSION - In conclusion, based on results it seems that 8-week Olive Leaf supplementation along with a weight loss diet compared with a weight-loss diet alone may be more effective in improving obesity and metabolic risk factors."

Barberry in the treatment of obesity and metabolic syndrome: possible mechanisms of action - "Recent studies have proved that berberine/barberry exhibits supportive activities and positive effects on the risk factors of obesity and metobolic syndrome" - "It has been reported that berberine reduces weight, the food intake, the ratio of epididymal fat to total weight, as well as the ratio of liver weight to total weight in a murine model. In addition, blood glucose, TG and total cholesterol levels were all reduced in high fat–fed obese mouse, revealing that berberine acts as a potential natural compound for the treatment of obesity" - "According to this study, berberine as a major antioxidant component of B. vulgaris, suppresses adipocyte differentiation and decreases obesity."

More Barberry / Berberine Research findings:
The findings of several recent studies on berberine and weight loss are below:
- A 2020 review investigating 35 studies from 2006–2019 suggests that berberine is effective in reducing and preventing obesity.
- Research from 2022 also concluded that berberine can help with long-term weight loss and prevent people from developing obesity.
- Another 2020 review investigating several effects of berberine supplements on the body found that taking berberine can reduce the following:
- body weight
- body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of a person’s body fat based on their height and weight
- waist circumference
- Research from 2023 refers to a clinical study in which participants with obesity took 1.5 grams (g) of berberine daily for 24 weeks. It found that berberine significantly reduced BMI and waist circumference among these people.
"Berberine (Ber) is a primary active ingredient isolated from the root and bark of Barberry - Coptidis rhizoma, a traditional Chinese herb recorded in the ancient book of traditional Chinese medicine, The Divine Farmer’s Classic of Materia Medica (Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing). It has been used for decades in China as a nonprescription drug to treat gastrointestinal infections, such as bacillary dysentery. Due to its multipharmacological effects on a wide spectrum of aging-related diseases, such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and Alzheimer's disease, Ber has been proposed as an attractive “elixir of eternal life” for anti-aging. In various model systems of aging/senescence, such as fetal lung diploid fibroblasts, Drosophila, and mice, Ber has readily demonstrated an anti-senescence or life span–prolonging function. Mitochondria are at the metabolic core of energy production and participate in the aging process as signaling organelles. This chapter discusses the metabolic control of Ber by mitochondria and caloric restriction as an anti-aging pharmacological mechanism."
